San Joaquin Gardens is Named "Employer of ChoiceSM"

FRESNO, California On January 14, 2003, San Joaquin Gardens will be named an "Employer of ChoiceSM" after successfully completing a rigorous evaluation process. There will be an awards ceremony and continental breakfast at 9:00 a.m. in The Gardens’ Fellowship Hall. San Joaquin Gardens is only the second employer in Fresno and the eighth employer in the nation to receive this title.

A company that is given the designation of Employer of ChoiceSM is being recognized for meeting or exceeding established high standards in eight different areas of evaluation. Those areas are company, culture, enlightened leadership, care of people, meaningful work, growth and opportunity, compensation and benefits, making a difference, employee loyalty, and performance results.

It is very important to San Joaquin Gardens to be a good employer and to employ the best, most skilled and dedicated staff, said Lois Manley, Director of Human Resources. To do this is not an easy task, but having the best staff means that residents receive top quality service and continuity of care.

Executive Director Mark Steele has created many programs to ensure that the staff at The Gardens feels appreciated and needed. These programs include the Employee of the Month program, Employee Appreciation Program, monthly employee breakfast and the Star Awards.

These programs identify the kinds of values that we want to reward, like excellent customer service, encouragement and innovation, Steele said. The employees are then motivated to excel in these areas. Those that are successful are recognized and rewarded monthly and annually.

Having an outstanding staff is very important to San Joaquin Gardens for one main reason: Quality of staff equals quality of service. With quality service, San Joaquin Gardens has happy residents, said Manley.

Since 1966, San Joaquin Gardens has been Fresno’s only Continuing Care Retirement Community that provides an active senior lifestyle. The community is dedicated to providing informative, educational opportunities as well as a wellness program to keep residents both mentally and physically fit. With four living options (residential, assisted, special care and the health center), residents possess security and peace of mind for the future.

About the Employer of ChoiceSM Recognition Program
Organizations earning the Employer of ChoiceSM designation, qualify by scoring among the top 10% of employers in every one of the following categories: The Company, The Culture, Enlightened Leadership, Care of People, Growth and Opportunity, Meaningful Work, Compensation & Benefits, Making a Difference, Employee Loyalty and Performance Results. These validation criteria are detailed in the book How to Become an Employer of Choice (Oakhill Press, 2000), recently named runner-up for Best Business Book of the Year 2000 by the Publishers Marketing Association. The 256-page hardcover book sells for $30. For more information about the designation, visit www.employerofchoice.net.
